Canamasas's GP2 race at Monza yesterday was compromised by brake problems but still managed to secure a rewarding sixth place at the end. Canamasas delivered one of his greatest performances at the wheel of a car of the Formula 1's main feeder series.
Sergio Canamasas scored valuable points in the drivers´ championship during Sunday's GP2 race at Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. Canamasas rolled off the starting grid from 11th, following his faultless recovery drive on Saturday from the back of the grid. When the lights went out, Canamasas moved up to fifth avoiding any incident at the first chicane. Behind the leaders, the Spaniard got his gap ruined when the safety car was deployed. From the very beginning, Team Lazarus driver was struggling with brakes problems but he mastered to defend his position from his rivals, running nose-to-tail behind him. Although Sergey Sirotkin made his way up to 5th, neither René Binder nor Raffaele Marciello could overtake the only Spaniard in the series. With his 6th place, Canamasas scores four points
“Sunday's race was extremely demanding, because I was suffering severe brake problems. And Monza isn´t the best place to have this kind of issues. As if it were not enough my rivals were right in my slipstream. So I have to used my experience to defend my place”, Canamasas explained. Despite “Sirotkin managed to pass me at the end of the straight neither Binder nor Marciello overtook me. Our result is very rewarding, and my start was essential again. I´m extremely happy because it's nice to achieve this result at Monza, which is the home event for Team Lazarus. For sure, they are very happy as well. Of course, I want to celebrate this result with my family and sponsors, because we got the result we deserved today. We must enjoy this wonderful moment”.
The GP2 Series will head to Russia on 10-11 October for the round taking place in Sochi.
