Nick Cassidy earned his first Formula E victory of 2023 to slash Pascal Wehrlein’s championship lead after holding off Jake Dennis in the second race of the Berlin double-header.

Much like Saturday’s race, the second Berlin race was one no driver wanted to lead during the first half with eight different race leaders within the first 12 laps.

Eventually it was Cassidy who made a break for it, taking Avalanche Andretti’s Dennis and DS Penske’s Jean-Eric Vergne with him.

That trio was helped by Antonio Felix da Costa tagging Mitch Evans at the Turn 6 hairpin with a few laps to go. Both drivers survived but it allowed the top three to break away, albeit with a slender margin.

Dennis couldn’t properly threaten Cassidy who held on to take his second victory in Formula E and close on Wehrlein at the top of the drivers’ championship.

Cassidy has had an eventful weekend in Berlin, having launched into a rant about his team-mate Sebastien Buemi during morning practice on Sunday, he was then disqualified from the intra-team quarter final duel that he won and was grounded to eighth on the grid.

Dennis ends a difficult run of four races without a point with his third second place finish of the season.

Vergne completed the podium in third place to maintain his championship hopes, while Evans and da Costa completed the top five.

Maximilian Guenther charged from 21st to sixth for Maserati ahead of points leader Wehrlein who along with da Costa was frustrated by some failed Porsche choreography.

Defending champion Stoffel Vandoorne had a quiet run to eighth place.

Qualifying heroes Robin Frijns and Nico Mueller, who secured a one-two for Abt Cupra on the grid, faced a tough fight to remain in the points.

Polesitter Frijns quickly fell out of the top 10 after briefly leading early on and ultimately finished down in 17th place.

Mueller was more successful in keeping pace with the pack and ultimately ended up finishing in ninth place to earn his first points of the season.

Dan Ticktum recovered from 18th to steal the final point in 10th place, one day on from his clash with Vandoorne and subsequent anger over the penalty he received for causing it.

The start of the race was delayed for almost 10 minutes when protestors stormed onto the track and sat in front of the second row of the grid. They were removed from the circuit but caused the start procedure to be delayed.

Sam Bird, who finished second in the first race of the weekend, had his hopes of a third successive podium dashed by front wing damage.

Likewise Sebastien Buemi – eighth in the points heading into the race – picked up race-wrecking damage from the back of Dennis while Edoardo Mortara’s miserable 2023 continued when he suffered damage that required a pitstop.
