Third generation driver Matt Brabham endured a tough week-end at the final round of the Indy Lights Championship presented by Cooper Tires at the picturesque 2.385 mile Sonoma Raceway, CA.
After qualifying in 5th for the first race held on Saturday, Brabham was unfortunately caught on the outside of turn two as several cars slid wide, dropping him back to 9th. Despite battling back to 6th at the finish, the serious lack of car speed for both Brabham and teammate Zack Veech who finished 7th, was a major talking point back in the Andretti Autosport trailer after the race.
A slight improvement for the Sunday morning warmup saw Veech and Brabham 2nd and 3 rd on the timing sheet, raising hopes for race two. For Brabham those hopes were dashed right at the start when the car right in front was a little slow on the jump, and the #83 hit him in the rear. This delayed both of them and they lost positions to the row on the outside on the run to the first corner.
Mired back in the pack again on the notoriously difficult circuit to pass, Brabham managed to get back to 5th place at the finish with a car that was suffering from a bad understeer imbalance at the end of the race.
"It's not the way you want to end the season, for sure. We kind of struggled this weekend, but we had some good times this year, so I have to thank the team for that. The Andretti Autosport guys worked hard all year, and we've had a lot of fun. We have a lot of good memories, and I'm kind of sad it's come to an end so quickly. Looking back, we had some really strong results. The race in Indy, for example, was really great, so we're looking on to ne xt year. I just want to thank everybody for the year... United Fiber & Data and MAZDASPEED have been really great supporters, so a huge thank you to them." Matthew said.
Brabham finished 4th in the championship final standings with 1 win, 2 seconds and a third place finish. The highlight of the season was wining at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course, and the biggest disappointment was losing the Freedom 100 at Indianapolis by 0.005 sec and also having a certain win taken away on a late restart at the Milwaukee mile.
