Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit will host the second race meeting of the 2014 Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series this weekend, 24th/25th May, where former championship winning squad Double R Racing is setting its sights high after a strong start to the campaign a fortnight ago.
Two podiums for Andy Chang during the season curtain-raiser at Rockingham in races one and three, added to sixth in round two, helped the Macanese driver conclude his maiden event in Formula 3 an impressive third in the standings, just four points shy of second place and only 10 points adrift of the championship lead.
Team-mate and fellow F3 rookie Camren Kaminsky ended the first weekend with a brace of top four results in the first and third races book-ending a fifth position finish in round two. The American is currently fifth in the title race, just five points shy of Chang.
Having already raced at the home of the British Grand Prix last month with Felipe Guimaraes in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Woking-based Double R is delighted to be heading back to Silverstone and confident of attaining more silverware at the resumption of the British F3 season.
“Andy and Camren each made a very strong start to the season at Rockingham and we’re confident they’ll both be battling for podiums at Silverstone”, said team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt, “It’s great being back, we had a good weekend there in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship last month and the information and data we gathered should stand us in good stead.
“We obviously use different tyres in British F3, Coopers rather than Hankooks, but we run the same chassis and engine package in both championships so that’s beneficial. I’m happy with the progress both drivers are making, Silverstone should be another big step forward.”
As well as the stellar debuts Chang and Kaminsky have each made in British F3, Double R has a successful track record in the category at Silverstone. During the corresponding fixture last year, the team claimed its first race victory since 2011 and also added two further podiums.
“Last season’s visit to Silverstone was fantastic”, added Hieatt, “It was a long time since our last win in British F3 so to get back onto the top step of the podium was incredible for everyone in the team. We’ve had a very good start to the season and confidence is definitely high ahead of next weekend.”
Following practice and qualifying at Silverstone on Friday, 23rd May, round four of the 2014 season will get underway at 11.40 on Saturday, 24th May, with round five beginning at 16.45. Round six will take place on Sunday, 25th May, at 13.40.
