Giovinazzi back on the top step at Norisring
Mon 29, Jun, 2015

Jagonya Ayam with Carlin driver Antonio Giovinazzi took victory on Sunday with an impressive performance at the Norisring in Germany. The Italian racer took the lead from third on the grid at the start and remained unchallenged to take the win in the final FIA Formula 3 European Championship race of the weekend. George Ilot in the sister Carlin car came home in second place. It was a tough race for Ryan Tveter and Gustavo Menezes in the remaining two Jagonya cars though, with Tveter taking 21st and Menezes out after an incident at the hairpin.

As the lights went out for the final race of the weekend, it was the fast moving Giovinazzi who immediately seized an opportunity at the front. The Italian passed both pole sitter Alexander Albon and second placed George Russel to steal through into the lead. Giovinazzi had little chance to build up a gap though, once again the safety car played its part with marshals recovering two cars stranded on the grid. With Giovinazzi leading, Menezes was also in the points in tenth while Tveter was 27th.

A great restart from Giovinazzi ensured the Jagonya Ayam man maintained the lead but only a few laps later team mate Menezes wasn’t quite so lucky, having to take avoiding action at the hairpin the American racer ended his race with broken suspension. Menezes’s stranded Dallara brought out the safety car once again but for the second time it was a good restart from Giovinazzi.

Giovinazzi was forced to make another restart after the third safety car of the race but miraculously based on recent FIA Formula 3 races, the final laps saw no incidents and Giovinazzi crossed the line to take his third win of the season and boost his championships campaign. With little chance to overtake, Tveter was 21st.

Giovinazzi is now second in the championship with 227 points to Charles Leclerc’s 269.5.

Race winner Giovinazzi reflected, “Finally a fantastic race. I made a good start and was P1 already by the first corner. George was behind so I just tried to manage good pace. I had to cope with three safety cars I think it was and did a good job and it’s nice to have George in the Carlin car in P2. A good job by the team, the car was great and want to dedicate this win to my grandfather who passed away this week.”

The Jagonya Ayam drivers will be back in action in Zandvoort from 10 – 12th July.
