Kunimoto joins Kobayashi in Super Formula line-up
Mon 10, Feb, 2020

carrozzeria Team KCMG will field a second Toyota-powered Dallara SF19 in the 2020 Super Formula campaign, with 2016 series champion Yuji Kunimoto joining ex-Formula 1 driver Kamui Kobayashi.

For carrozzeria Team KCMG’s 11th consecutive season in Japan’s premier single seater championship, the Hong Kong-based squad welcomes Kunimoto. The 29-year-old has an immense track record as the 2008 Formula Challenge Japan champion before taking the 2010 Japanese Formula 3 title.

Kunimoto arrived in Super Formula the following year (known then as Formula Nippon), while also running a parallel Super GT campaign. After winning the former with two victories in 2016, he enters the new season as a carrozzeria Team KCMG driver.

Multiple World Endurance Championship race-winner with Toyota Kobayashi is retained by the team for a fourth year, having taken two second-place finishes at Sugo and Motegi in 2019 helping the 33-year-old reach the top six in the drivers’ championship.

Tsugio Matsuda will continue his role as Team Manager in 2020.

Yuji Kunimoto: “I’m very excited to join carozzeria Team KCMG for this Super Formula season. It’s a historic team in the series having raced in it for so long. I look forward to the year ahead aiming for strong results.”

Kamui Kobayashi: “To be entering my fourth season with carozzeria Team KCMG is quite something. Last year was our most successful together, with two podiums, and we look forward to building on that and go one step further in 2020. It’s great to see the team expand to two cars and I look forward to working alongside Yuji.”
