Victory, fastest lap and pole position sealed the perfect performance by Ollie Millroy in Sepang this weekend where the Briton and AAI Motorsport dominated round two of the Malaysian Super Series.
The 23-year-old Esher resident is already set to lead the Taiwanese squad’s Asian Le Mans Series assault later this season, but received a call late on Thursday to fly out for an unscheduled appearance in one of Asia’s premier sportscar championships.
Despite arriving just hours before Saturday’s qualifying, Millroy showed no signs of jetlag by comfortably claiming overall pole position in the extremely busy session that featured a variety classes, as well as those running to his BMW Z4 GT3’s ‘GT Open’ specification.
Team-mate and AAI Motorsport co-owner Jun San Chen, who will also partner Ollie in the AsLMS, took the wheel for the start of Sunday’s 50-minute race but had slipped to fourth by the time he pitted at one-third distance for the car’s mandatory driver change.
A standout performance was therefore required from Millroy, who duly summoned all of his previous experience with the Z4 to catch and pass those ahead over the final half-hour. Such was his incredible pace that, after dispatching the front-runners, he was able to build a 33-second lead and set fastest lap before taking the chequered flag.
“The call came completely out of the blue on Thursday night so it was a bit of a rush to get everything sorted in time,” said Millroy. “We had tested the car at Sepang a couple of weeks beforehand so I knew what to expect, which was just as well considering I only arrived before qualifying!
“As well as a decent GT3 field, the Malaysian Super Series includes cars that are slower than our BMW, so there was a lot of traffic to negotiate in qualifying. It was impossible to find a clear lap, but I was pretty happy to be on pole by half a second.
“Honestly, we saw the weekend as another opportunity to develop the car ahead of the Asian Le Mans Series’ opening round, so to come away with a dominant victory is just the icing on the cake! The car felt great and we’ve made a lot of progress since the first test. Having a chance to race with Jun San was also useful preparation before the real thing.”
The opening round of this season’s Asian Le Mans Series takes place at Inje Speedium in South Korea on July 20.
