Barkingside’s Scott Malvern finally delivered the result that bad luck has denied him several times this season by taking his first win in the Radical SR3 Challenge at Donington Park last weekend.
Scott was put on solo driver duties for the two forty minute endurance events with regular co-driver and car owner Nick Jones electing to race instead in the two Radical Clubmans Events in the same S&D Sealants backed car. It meant a very busy Sunday for the Kevin Mills Race Team with the car having to take to the track no less than five times.
Qualifying late on Saturday was a very close run affair with Scott taking third place on the grid for both races losing out on pole position by a tenth of a second on both occasions. But come the first race at Midday on Sunday in bright, warm and sunny conditions Scott was in no mood to be denied. He quickly overtook Championship Leader Phil Keen with an audacious move on the first lap at the Melbourne loop Hairpin and set off after race leader Lewis Plato who had managed to pull a gap.
Scott put in some impressive lap ties as he closed on Plato but on lap 6 the leader spun off the track at the Old Hairpin leaving Scott in clean air with the race lead and despite a determined effort by Phil Keen in second place he was unable to close Scott down.
After the mandatory pit stop Scott looked to be in complete control building a lead of over ten seconds but then the safety car was deployed due to the stricken vehicle of Grahame Tilley which completely neutralised Scott’s advantage.
With less than five minutes left on the clock, the incident was clear and the safety car pulled back into the pits, Scott timed his restart perfectly and was immediately back into his stride building a winning margin of almost eleven seconds at the chequered flag.
Scott delighted to take his first win in the series said afterwards “That’s been on the cards for a while and I’d very much like to thank Nick Jones for letting me handle the car solo this weekend. It’s been great for both of us because Nick has shown very good pace in the Clubman Cup races and battled at the sharp end. I knew that we could go for the win today and I always felt comfortable and in control”
Scott was keen to repeat his success in the final race of the day which started just after 6pm in rapidly fading light. Again he made a great start taking 2nd place straight away from Sean Abbot at Redgate Corner he looked well set to fight for the win again but unfortunately an overheating engine saw him retire just five laps in. Scott was disappointed but far from despondent after his win earlier in the day. “I think we asked just a little bit too much of the car today. There was less than half an hour gap between Nick’s last Clubman race and my final Challenge Race so it was a very tight turnaround. I noticed in the holding area before the race started that the engine temperature was still really high so it was a worry but we tried to go for the double anyway but unfortunately the kit let us down. Ideally Nick & I would have had a car each today but that requires a much bigger budget! It has still been a very good day and I’m delighted to have finally won in the Radical”
