Seb Morris seamlessly transferred his considerable on-track motorsport ability to the world of online sim racing on Sunday, 26th April, with a top six finish for Bentley Motorsport on his debut in the SRO E-Sport GT Series.
Competing alongside almost 50 other professional racing drivers from real-world motor racing, including Bentley team-mate Alex Buncombe, former FIA Formula One World Champion Jenson Button and current Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver Charles Leclerc, 24-year-old Morris starred.
“It’s an honour to have been selected by Bentley and SRO to represent them in the E-Sport GT Series”, said Morris, “All of the team at Bentley Motorsport worked really hard to get us all up to speed. From only purchasing a simulator three or four weeks ago to now competing at the very highest level, it’s been a steep learning curve but one I’m proud to have overcome and succeed.”
Having never participated before in the ever-expanding world of sim racing, the Bentley factory driver adapted quickly and ultimately ended the one-hour race at a virtual Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit a highly creditable sixth out of 49 drivers.
After earlier qualifying the No.31 Bentley Continental GT3 13th quickest, he carved his way through the order impressively and actually ran as high as fifth into the second half-hour of the contest which delivered plenty of action.
With just 15 minutes elapsed Morris was into the top 10, just ahead of Button, and soon enough he had climbed into the top eight. Making the most of a skirmish ahead to rise into seventh place with 38 minutes to go, the British Racing Drivers’ Club ‘Superstar’ then broke into the top six.
Closing on the Audi R8 of Ivan Pareras, Morris took fifth place into the second part of the encounter and remained there into the final 15 minutes before being shuffled back to sixth by David Perel’s Ferrari 488 GT3.
“When I saw myself sixth in the race, ahead of Jenson Button and some of the other massive names like Charles Leclerc and some of the best GT drivers in the world, I thought, yeah, I’ve done well here! I’m glad I’ve done Bentley proud, and congrats to Jordan Pepper for taking the win for Bentley.
“It’s given me the confidence now to know I can really do this and push on to the next race. Obviously, I can’t wait to get back into the real thing and back in my real-world Bentley Continental GT3 but, until then, this is a very good substitute for the drivers, the teams and also the fans.”
The SRO E-Sports GT Series, organised by the same people behind the Intercontinental GT Challenge and GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup in which Morris races for Bentley in real world competition, utilises the Assetto Corsa Competizione sim racing platform.
Next on the ‘lockdown’ racing schedule for Morris will be the second race of the SRO E-Sport GT Series on Sunday, 10th May, at a virtual Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
