Double R Racing is delighted to announce Hong Kong-based Briton Dan Wells will team-up with the squad’s Cooper Tires British Formula 3 Championship regular Camren Kaminsky at Brands Hatch this coming weekend, 30th/31st August, during the penultimate event of the 2014 season.
Marking the F3 debut for Southampton-born Wells, who has resided in the Far East since 2012, rounds 16, 17 and 18 of the campaign on the Kent venue’s full-length Grand Prix Circuit will see the 23-year-old pilot a Dallara-Mercedes as preparation for a planned assault on Japanese F3 next year.
Driving the Dallara F312 which was raced last time out at Thruxton by Max Marshall, and which was previously steered to podium success by Andy Chang during the first half of the season, Wells says he cannot wait to get out on track less than a week from now.
“I’m looking forward to my debut F3 race and it’s great for it to be on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit too”, he commented, “I went to the 2009 British F3 races there as a guest of Double R before I had started my racing career, so it’s a happy coincidence that I will make my F3 debut with the team now. There is limited practice time, but I'm looking forward to a productive weekend.”
Wells’ involvement with motorsport began in Senior Rotax Max Karting in 2009 before leaping into car racing in Formula Ford 1600 the following year. Taking the class pole position and victory in his first ever race in single-seaters, the Briton added more success that year before graduating into Formula Renault UK for the 2010 Winter Series.
After continuing in the championship in 2011, where he was 10th overall, he went on to become Winter Series Vice-Champion with three podiums from six races. Moving to Asia in 2012 to try and further his career advancement, Wells became Vice-Champion of the Formula Pilota China Series in his first season with three victories.
In 2013, the highlight of a limited season of racing was a second place finish in the prestigious Formula Masters support race at the Macau Grand Prix. Wells is currently third in the championship midway through his first full season.
“We’re delighted to be able to give Dan his Formula 3 debut at Brands, he’s a driver we’ve known since he started out in racing and has had a lot of success in Asia since he moved there three years ago”, said Double R team principal Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt, “It’s going to be a big step up into the F3 car for the first time in a racing environment, but we’re confident he’ll do a very good job.”
Team-mate Camren Kaminsky heads to Brands Hatch on the crest of a wave, having secured his first F3 podium at Thruxton just over a week ago, and the American 20-year-old is determined to try and keep his momentum rolling.
Fifth in the championship standings ahead of the weekend’s action at the team’s ‘home’ track, the first year F3 racer is growing in confidence all of the time and has shown some impressive flashes of pace and performance in recent rounds.
“Camren is on a real high after Thruxton”, added Hieatt, “He did a great job to take his first podium there and now knows he has the ability to achieve those results. Brands Hatch GP is a challenging track in an F3 car, but with some trouble-free running in testing we’re positive Camren can keep building the momentum and carry it through to the series finale at Donington next month too.”
Following a short 30-minute practice at Brands Hatch on Saturday, 30th August, British F3 qualifying will take place at 14.30 with the first race following at 17.10. On Sunday, 31st August, round 17 will begin at 10.55 with round 18 getting underway at 16.35.
